Unique design of Swagelok Tube Fittings
Swagelok - Better by Design
Bite-type fittings generate a sharp indent on the surface of the tube during installation - this "bite" forms the tube grip. However, the minimal contact of the biting ferrule offers little support behind the bite, meaning potential tube pullout. And where forces become concentrated at the bite, a stress riser can result where tube fractures may occur.
Swagelok's tube fitting is NOT a bite-type design. Instead it uses a grip-type design that uses a unique "hinging and colleting"action to achieve optimal performance in three key areas:
Tube grip
- hinging colleting action provides more direct tube contact/gripping support
Gas seal
- burnishing/polishing action of the front ferrule creates concentrated zones of contact on the tube and on the body bevel for a stronger seal
Vibration resistance
- the colleting region better isolates stress risers at the tube grip to resist bending, deflection, and vibration
Also, note that even if the installer severely overtightens a connection, the back ferrule will not bite through the tubing due to the hinging colleting design.
